Road 6 north extension

Highway 6, widely known as the Trans-Israel Highway or Cross-Israel Highway, is a major electronic toll highway. It started operating in the early 2000s and is being lengthened as construction proceeds on newer sections. As of 2010, the northern terminus was extended 17 kilometers from Wadi Ara to the Ein Tut Interchange where the highway now merges into Highway 70 south of Yokne'am. Currently Highway 6 is 140 km long, all of which is a freeway. This figure will grow when the extension to Shlomi which is currently undergoing statutory approvals and permitting processes, is completed.

Highway 6 is the first Israeli Build Operate Transfer (BOT) road constructed, carried out mainly by the private sector company Derech Eretz Ltd., in return for a license to collect tolls on the highway for a given number of years. It is also one of the largest infrastructure projects undertaken in Israel in recent years.

Emek Ayalon the Firm's associated company undertook project management services for the two components:

Tut Interchange (Route 6 & Route 70) | Emek Ayalon
Tut Interchange (Route 6 & Route 70)

Route 6 joins route 70 the main highway connecting Zichron Yacov and the Jezreel valley at Yokne'am. The junction occurs at Ein Tut and a major fly-over interchange was required which included bridges, ramps, underpasses, and landscaping to meet the environmental requirements.

Emek Ayalon provided planning and management, logistics, budgeting control, and scheduling and full on-site construction supervision services.

Details of special components of fly-over interchange:

  • Road Construction
  • Plank bridge over Route 6.
  • Reinforced soil walls in about 5,500 m²
  • Development work and lighting.

Road 6 (Wadi Ara to Tut Interchange)

Completed in 2009, the construction of the road was repeatedly delayed by objections and legal action on the part of environmental organizations. In addition, a two-year delay stemmed from ultra-Orthodox protests against the original route, on the grounds that it would have destroyed ancient Jewish graves.

To solve the environmental problem, the route was changed, and to minimize the environmental damage, the Derech Eretz Company built 14 overpasses totaling 2,500 meters in length, two interchanges, two tunnels totaling 350 meters in length and two animal crossings totaling 150 meters in length. As a result, this section of the road cost NIS 1.25 billion.

Emek Ayalon provided planning and management, logistics, budgeting control, and scheduling services. In addition, supervision oversight over a separate company providing detailed construction supervision was carried out.

Details of special components:

  • Digging a tunnel from 2X350m double escape tunnel. Arched tunnel cross-section width 14 m x 9 m.
  • 2 animal crossings "cut & cover" length 200m.
  • 10 bridges and sections of length 250-270 m, spans up to 60 meters. Width of 13 meters.
  • 11 bridges and beams
  • 2 bridges cast in place including a road bridge over Amikam valley with length 150 m with a segment 40 m long and 13 m wide.
  • 12,000 m² reinforced soil walls.
  • Concrete protection elements of the national water carrier.
