City of Modi'in, Valleys

The natural topography of Modi'in is characterized by winding valleys with a relatively flat floor and sloping sides, like fingers of a natural drainage basin gently flowing to the west. As an analogy the valleys are seen as "rivers" flowing with green, dotted with public buildings that can be used as a treed promenade for evening strolls, or shaded play areas for families. Three of the valleys converge at the Town center thus providing good safe walking environment between commercial retail faculties. The master plan for Modi'in mandated that the roads in the valley would be one way on each side of the valley, and that the space between the roads is devoted only to open space and pubic use. Urban design guidelines for the location, size and shape of public buildings are part of the statutory plan and this requirement provides continuity of open space, at each phase of development. Each valley has a common theme but unique character, so one tree was selected and specified as the dominant species. The Firm has completed the following examples:

The design of Valley Rabin features a wide green boulevard that is winding its way along the length of the valley around the schools and connecting the large open space play areas, thus maintaining a secure continuity of movement.

The design of Valley Hula features a sequence of "rooms" of different design emphasizing the shape and slope of the valley as it changes and flows towards the town center. The "rooms" range from formal, geometric and predominately hard surface design to large open grass bowls.

The design of Valley Ayalon features a wide walkway on close to the valley road, and separated from traffic by raised planting. The center of the valley is grassed with shaded sculpted play areas connected by pathways creating alcoves for families and young children to play.

The design of Valley Dotan features a green spine and sequence of canopy treed zones encouraging sitting playing and strolling in a shaded echoing the "bustan" and historic valley and terraced strips indigenous to the area.
